The new residential building on Badenerstrasse is conceived as a metropolitan apartment building. It forms a link between the monumental Lochergut and the adjacent neighbourhood and completes the urban fabric of Zurich’s 19th-century Aussersihl district.

The apartments are designed as double-sided hall apartments. One can cook and eat along the panoramic scenery of Badenerstrasse. The apartments combine a vibrant view of urban street life with a peaceful retreat into quiet courtyards. The living areas, loggias and bedrooms create secluded hideaways along the tranquil Meinrad-Lienert-Strasse.

During the day, with all the doors open, the space flows seamlessly, while at night the privacy of a traditional apartment takes precedence. Sanded subfloors and chrome steel kitchens complement the exposed wooden ceilings. Concrete beams and slender steel supports are reminiscent of repurposed warehouses.

The ground floor is designed as a flexible urban space and the building’s prominent corner is destined to house one of the neighbourhood’s iconic cafés.

The structure is designed as a sustainable hybrid timber construction with exposed timber ceilings and polished concrete floors. The façades consist of sculptural parapet bands made from recycled highway guardrails. These unconventional ready-mades challenge the viewer. They resist complacency and stand for dynamism, change, diversity, and openness.
